Richard Benton moved his family to the island of St. Croix, located in the U.S. Virgin Islands. A carpenter by trade, he reopened Thermac Construction, LTD, which eventually merged to become Centex-Rooney-Thermac.
Hurricane Hugo swept through the Territory destroying more than 75% of homes and businesses and causing upwards of $500M dollars in damages. It would forever change the landscape and construction industry in the Caribbean for decades to come.
Richard founded Benton Construction Company, Inc. after Hurricane Hugo destroyed much of St. Croix. Benton Construction completed several notable projects such as the Ingeborg Nesbitt Clinic in Frederiksted, University of the Virgin Islands Dormitories and Ancillary Buildings and a Fiber Optic Cable Landing Station for AT&T.
James Benton returned home after building union and open shop projects in Boston, Quincy, Malden and North Attleborough. His first two projects completed upon returning to St. Croix were the Divi Carina Bay Casino and Global Crossing Fiber Optic Terminal Building.
James is promoted to President of Benton Construction Company, Inc. His first project was a Leo A. Daly designed Air Traffic Control Tower for the Virgin Islands Port Authority at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport.
In August of 2006, James Benton founded J. Benton Construction, LLC with the intent of providing a better solution for design and construction and added value for our clients.
J. Benton Construction completed its first major project, Executive Offices for the Government Employees' Retirement System (GERS). This project sat idle for nearly two years before J. Benton took it over and successfully completed it. Today, it stands as one of the most admired buildings on the island.
J. Benton Construction established a full-time presence in St. Thomas out of a growing demand for their services from repeat clients.
Providing exceptional client service and contributing to the local community are just a couple of the reasons J. Benton Construction received the Business of the Year award from St. Croix Chamber of Commerce.
Building relationships, working hard and celebrating being voted Best Builder / Construction Contractor on St. Croix 10 Years in a row by the Virgin Islands Daily News. J. Benton has been fortunate enough to win this award every year.
Two category 5 hurricanes struck the Territory within two weeks of each other. Hurricanes Irma and Maria left a path of destruction across the entire region. J. Benton Construction assisted the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in emergency recovery and restoration efforts.
In addition to providing blue tarps and emergency roadside clearing, J. Benton was contracted to supplement a program to provide temporary education facilities so that students could return to the public schools.
In January of 2019, J. Benton Construction made an exciting leap towards the future and entered into a partnership with Consigli Construction Co., Inc.
With more than 1,200 employees; seven regional offices dotting the east coast from Maine to Washington, DC; and $2 billion in annual volume, Consigli has expanded its roots, while maintaining its core competencies as a true builder.

In 1905 Peter Consigli, a skilled mason, established Peter Consigli & Sons in Milford, Massachusetts on the cornerstones of hard work, integrity and pride in craftsmanship. Over a century later, Consigli has grown from a local business into one of the largest general contractors in the Northeast.
In 2019, J. Benton Construction created a strategic partnership with Consigli Construction Co., Inc. A fourth generation, family-led company with an annual volume of $2 billion, Consigli provides added technical and financial resources for J. Benton clients with more than 1,200 professionals on staff.
